Johnny Jones, a member of two LSU NCAA Final Four teams as a player and assistant coach, was named on April 13 as the 21st men's head basketball coach at LSU. Jones, 51, a native of DeRidder, LA and graduate of DeRidder High. has served the last 11 seasons as the head men's basketball coach at the University of North Texas. As the head coach of UNT prior to the 2001-02 season, the Mean Green advanced to four of the last six Sun Beld Conference tournament championship games, including each of the last three seasons.
Jones played four years at LSU and was a member as a freshman of the 1981 NCAA Final Four team under Coach Dale Brown. He served 13 years on the coaching staff at LSU, and was on the staff when the Tigers became at that time the first 11-seed to advance to the NCAA Final Four in 1986. Dave Simmons head coach of Men's Basketball at McNeese State in Lake Charles, LA, a DeRidder, LA native and graduate of DeRidder High. Simmons was named Louisiana's State Coach of the Year! In the past two seasons Simmons has led McNeese to the finals of the Southland Conference tournament and into post season tournament play each year. The Cowboys compiled a 17-16 overall record this past year, were runnerups in the SLC tournament and competed in the CollegeInsider.Com post season tournament. (For more information click here.)
Coach Simmons has been around winning athletic programs at every turn, particularly for the past seven seasons when he helped Northwestern State rebuild its basketball fortunes.
